Do I Need a Business Tax Receipt in Key West?
Yes, almost certainly. If you operate a business inside Key West city limits you generally need a business tax receipt from the City of Key West and a separate one from Monroe County. They are two different registrations with two different offices.
People still call these occupational licenses out of habit. Florida renamed them years ago, and the new name is more honest about what they are. A business tax receipt is a local tax and registration. It is not a professional license and it does not certify that you are qualified to do anything.
When are they due?
Business tax receipts run on a fiscal year and expire September 30. Renewals open in July and run through September, so if you are reading this in late summer you are in the window right now.
One change worth knowing: the City of Key West moved renewal notices to email and away from paper invoices. If you have been waiting for something in the mail, that is why it has not arrived. Check the inbox you gave the licensing division, and check spam. Late renewals pick up penalties, and the penalty schedule escalates the longer you leave it.
Do I really need both the city and the county?
If you are inside city limits, usually yes. The county receipt does not cover the city and the city receipt does not cover the county. Businesses located in unincorporated Monroe County typically need only the county one.
This catches people who move. If you relocate from unincorporated county into the city, or across a municipal line, your obligations change with the address.
What if I work from home, or I am online only?
Home-based businesses generally still need one. So do a lot of online businesses with a Key West address. The receipt attaches to the business activity and the location, not to whether you have a storefront with a sign on it.
There can also be zoning or home occupation conditions attached, which is a separate question from the tax receipt itself and worth checking before you assume you are clear.
What happens if I never got one?
It is fixable, and it is better to fix it voluntarily than to be found. The usual exposure is back tax plus penalties for the years you operated without one. It also tends to surface at the worst moment, when you are selling the business, applying for financing, or renewing something else and someone pulls the record.
Is it deductible?
Yes. It is an ordinary and necessary business expense. Code it to taxes and licenses rather than burying it in miscellaneous, which makes it easier to see year over year and easier to substantiate.
Frequently asked questions
When does a Key West business tax receipt expire?
September 30 each year. Renewals are generally handled between July and September.
Do I need a business tax receipt for a home-based business in Key West?
Generally yes. The requirement follows the business activity and location rather than whether you have a commercial storefront.
Is a business tax receipt the same as a professional license?
No. It is a local tax registration. Any state licensing your profession requires is entirely separate.
What happens if I renew late?
Penalties apply and they increase the longer the receipt stays lapsed. Renew inside the window if you can.
